HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY- After admitting results of a recent study suggest there is a cancer cluster in the Tamaqua / Hometown area, investigators with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry don't know what's driving the spike in sickness.
About 100 people from Schuylkill, Carbon and Luzerne Counties came to this public hearing hoping to learn the source. Just what's brought on mystery cancers and diseases?
For Betty Kester, it was just one more chapter in a running list of let downs. Kester has Polycythemia Vera, a rare cancer of the blood. Her husband has it and so does a neighbor. She believes ground water and Still Creek Reservoir, which serves most of Tamaqua, are polluted with toxins from the nearby McAdoo Superfund site.
And others agree right along with her. reservoir sits in a valley down hill from the McAdoo Superfund site. It's believed years of dumping thousands of drums of contaminants into mine shafts has finally caught up with the people in the area.
Some believe the real potential factors causing these illnesses will never be investigated.
