Canton Schools Closed for Week After Threat - Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at 5:30PM EST

CANTON, BRADFORD COUNTY- Canton police cars remained in front of Canton Area High School Wednesday morning as investigators continued to look into threats of violence that have many people on edge. Classes are canceled until Monday after several students threatened to "shoot" people at school Tuesday.

Canton Police Chief Doug Seeley said, “There were no weapons actually found in school or brought to school. We have reports of them coming to school, but none were found."

Five teenagers now face charges of making “terroristic threats” and “risking a catastrophe.” Police say they were part of a "self-formed" gang. “The gang, they were called the DBK's, which means Drive-By-Kings. That was the name. They wore colors, black and white," said Seeley.

District leaders say they canceled classes for the rest of the week so they can look at installing metal detectors and other security measures. Canton School District Superintendent Jeffrey Johnston said, “We just didn't feel that we could do that overnight, or even in a day, so they felt that just to calm people down and give us an opportunity to explore these things."

But some parents in the district are angry with that decision. “I don't think it was a good idea. The teachers and all, they thought they should work and go to school. I think we ought to listen to what the teachers have to say," said one parent who didn’t want to be identified.

“As far as our students being safe to come to school Monday, with what we're putting into place, I'm very confident to say they will be," added Johnston.

Because of the safety threats in Canton the school board plans to hold another meeting Wednesday evening in the high school auditorium at 7:00. Officials say they plan to update parents on all the ongoing safety issues.
