Carbon Monoxide Concerns in Taylor

Carbon Monoxide Concerns in Taylor - Saturday, December 29, 2007 at 10:10PM EST

TAYLOR, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - Firefighters and environmental leaders are trying to get to the bottom of a strange odor, possibly carbon monoxide, which is making its way through parts of Taylor borough tonight.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas.Ê Officials think the gas has been invading parts of the lower end of Loomis Avenue by making its way through the sewer lines.

"Naturally, our first concern is the residents of the community here, for their safety and well-being," Mayor Richard Bowen said Saturday.

Only a handful of homes are affects, but local leaders don't want to take any chances. One woman was taken to the hospital Friday night after complaining of headaches. Headaches are one of the first signs of CO poisoning.

"We're kind of narrowing it down to where it is and we're going to go from there," Mayor Bowen said.

Why the gas is invading the neighborhood is the question everyone wants the answer to. While some think it could be leakage from an old mine, while others think nearby construction on a new Wal-Mart Center could be to blame.

"Anything could be possible. It's hard to say, some of the mining maps are non-existant. Some are hard to find. We want to get to the bottom of it as quickly as possible," Mayor Bowen said.

In the meantime, local leaders are urging people in the neighborhood to take action to keep their families safe.

"I would recommend for everyone at the end of the block, for everyone to invest in a CO detector. I think you should put it in the basement. They run by batteries like a smoke detector," Mayor Bowen said.

Local leaders plan to meet Monday with the Bureau of Surface Mining and Wal-Mart construction crews to try to get to the bottom of the carbon monoxide situation.
