Carbondale Man Sentenced for Sex Assaults - Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 04:06AM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- A Lackawanna County judge threw the book at an admitted sex offender Wednesday morning. Michael Stuart of Carbondale learned he'll spend up to 27 years in prison for sexually abusing two young girls.

Stuart admitted to sexually abusing the two girls over an eight year period. The prosecutor on the case says that's the longest period of time she's ever dealt with. It's because of that fact the judge gave Stuart no leniency.

Michael Stuart has been behind bars for months and he's not getting out anytime soon. Wednesday he learned he'll spend between 11 and 27 years in prison for sexually assaulting two young girls.

Assistant District Attorney Mariclare Hayes said, "It was harsh but we were extremely pleased though. I think the judge took it into account the heinousness of the actions and the fact that he forever changed the lives of two young girls."

In court defense attorney Brett Riegel told the judge his client immediately admitted to the crimes to spare the girls a trial. "Here, Mr. Stuart came forward and provided excruciating detail to law enforcement to assist them in their investigation and unfortunately that seems to have been part of what was held against him," said Riegal.

According to court papers the abuse happened at a home on Pike Street in Carbondale. Prosecutors say the abuse started when the girl's were just five and seven respectively.

It then continued for a total of eight years. "One of his statements to the police after he was arrested was that if it hadn't stopped when it did, he probably would have tried to do it again," said Hayes.

In court Stuart apologized to his victims. He called what he did "selfish." He also said he knew he had a problem and sought counseling, but couldn't continue it because it cost too much. "If he'd been able to continue treatment, it's very likely he would have been successful in his efforts to keep the thoughts as nothing but thoughts," added Riegal.

In addition to prison time Stuart was determined to be a "sexual predator." The judge said when he's released he's to have no contact with minors.
