HAZLE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY - A new government auto incentive program has phones ringing at area car dealerships.
It's called "Cash for Clunkers" and the government will give rebates of up to $4,500 when you trade in your clunker.
There are some stipulations -- the vehicle has to be manufactured in 1984 or later -- and it has to get 18 miles-per-gallon or less.
It's hoped the cash for clunkers program will stimulate auto sales and help clean up the environment at the same time.
Chris Swolensky of Independence Toyota says, "It's a positive thing for customers to trade out of their vehicles. The government with the emissions and gas mileage is what they're trying to improve."
Along with generating a lot of interest, Independence Toyota says the incentive program is also boosting its sales. The dealership is delivering about 10 cars a day through the "Cash for Clunkers" program. | |
