KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY -- People gathered Sunday to pay tribute to soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The 59th annual event at the 109th Field Artillery in Kingston paid tribute to victims of a September, 1950 train crash in Ohio. 33 soldiers from the First Battalion 109 Field Artillery were killed en route to Camp Atterbury, Indiana.

Dog tags were also placed on 11 crosses signifying different battles and wars in which the 109th has served.

Current soldiers say it's important to honor the memory of their military predecessors. SFC John Karpovich said, "It's important as a soldier today that we take time to remember those who have come before us. Without those before us there may not have been somebody here today... I might not be speaking here today."

The 109th says it's also important to recognize the support soldiers get from families and veterans.
