Charges Leave Shenandoah Police Dept. Down to 3 Officers - Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 5:55PM EST

SHENANDOAH, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY -- The Shenandoah Police Department is down four police officers, including its chief. Federal indictments have led to borough management moving on and people here feeling uneasy.

The Shenandoah Borough Manager says no official decision has been made for the immediate future of these police officers.

He says he's working under the assumption they won't return to the force as they await their trial. This leaves Shenandoah with three police officers and a new plan for public safety.

Dawn Straka says she didn't feel safe in Shenandoah before Tuesday's indictments. Now she feels worse. "I don't walk down the street without my husband. Especially with my kids or somebody else with us. I mean, I don't feel safe in this town,” says Dawn Straka.

Borough Manager Joe Palubinski has his hands full. "I was surprised, shocked, but again it is a black eye for the borough of Shenandoah," he told Eyewitness News.

Now comes a new plan for public safety. Shenandoah's Borough Manager got on the phone immediately with State Police this morning and he tells me that troopers will help what's left of the Shenandoah police department patrol this borough.

"The residents of Shenandoah will have 24 hour police protection. That's our main concern, our foremost concern and we'll continue to provide that," adds Palubinski.

He says it's too early to decide if Shenandoah will hire new police officers. There is a special council meeting Wedenesday night, originally scheduled to adopt a tentative borough budget.

Palubinski says if these indictments are discussed by elected officials at that meeting, it will be behind closed doors, in executive session.

As for any cases the four indicted police officers were currently handling, borough management says a decision to reassign those cases will likely be up to the district attorney.
