SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY

Fire Chief Tom Davis is calling a fire that destroyed a building and business in North Scranton a case of arson.

The fire was discovered shortly before 11 Monday night in a two story building at West Market Street and North Keyser Avenue. It quickly became a two alarm blaze.

Apartments on the second floor were unoccupied. A neighbor said there had been seven tenants who moved out about a week and a half ago. The building was scheduled to be sold at auction in March.

Joe Perri operated Peppino's Pizza Shop downstairs. He said he started the business about eight weeks ago. Perri said he learned of the fire when a neighbor, a fireman, called to say he heard the alarm on his scanner.
