COOLBAUGH TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY - A woman who survived the Holocaust and went on to become an award winning author brought history to life for students in the Pocono Mountain Area School District.
When Inge Aurbacher was growing up, Jews in Germany were forced to wear stars so everyone knew their religion. It was used as a symbol of hate and disbuts. But Inge turned it around. She now uses it to send messages of respect and love. She said, "To me every human being is a star."
The German Army shipped Inge to a concentration camp when she was seven years old. She suffered there for about three years. The Russian army set her family free. Now Inge dedicates her life to sharing her story. She said, "I have to speak for the one and a half million Jewish children especially who didn't make it."
Friday she talked with seventh Graders at Clear Run Intermediate School. Student Athena Gallagher said, "I thought this was an honor and it was an amazing feeling to see her here with us."
A teacher invited Inge to share her story after some students read her book "I am a Star" for a class project. That teacher, Susan Pirrocco said, "You've got to make it exciting, you've got to make it interesting and you've got to make it come alive and I think we've accomplished that today."
Student Sabrina Ventirello said, "I can't believe I"m like seeing all of it. It's hard to take in but it's an amazing feeling."
Inge hopes the students learned you can grow from horrible situations. She said, "Yes you are angry. You are. Why me? But you have to get over that. What good does it do in your life? You have to go on." | | |
