Chris Doherty Wins Tight Battle for Scranton Mayor

Chris Doherty Wins Tight Battle for Scranton Mayor - Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at 11:15PM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty narrowly won the nomination over challenger Gary DiBileo in a hotly contested race for the Democratic ticket.
Just about an hour after the polls closed Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty knew he had enough votes to take the Democratic primary in the Electric City.

The mayor arrived at the Green Ridge Club in his normal fashion with a police escort, shaking hands with neighbors. More than 150 friends, family and supporters chanted "four more years" as Doherty started his acceptance speech. He said this primary victory is about the citizens and future of Scranton.

He acknowledged the fact that he was not the "endorsed candidate" but said now is a time for everyone to come together, reflecting on the past and thinking of the future.

Voter turnout in Scranton was moderate to heavy. For city council, it appears two incumbents won't be back. Both Judy Gatelli and Sherry Nealon-Fanucci failed in their bids for the Democratic nomination. Janet Evans was the top vote getter, followed by Pat Rogan and Frank Joyce. Those 3 will appear on the ballot in November.

Tuesday it was all about last minute campaigning for the three candidates. They may have different plans, but all three Scranton mayoral candidates were together looking for last minute votes, outside the Charles Sumner School.

“I feel good. I feel like we gave it our all. I feel that we ran a clean campaign, a good campaign and I'm feeling confident," said DiBileo.

“We believe people are very happy in the direction the city is going in, for all the progress we've seen and the development and our park system," said Doherty.

This was a rematch of the Democratic primary four years ago. In that race, more than 50% of voters turned out. The margin of victory was only a few hundred votes.

Just like last time, voters were once again split. Elizabeth Granahan said, “I think the city is really moving forward now, as it is, I mean. The mayor's done a wonderful job."

However Kami Schmechel said, “I just think we need a change, more than what we have here, with taxes and everything."

On the Republican side, Bob Bolus is alone, but Mayor Doherty is running a write-in campaign.
