Chris Hackett: Decision 2008 Profile

Chris Hackett: Decision 2008 Profile - Thursday, October 30, 2008 at 6:00PM EST

The 10th District is the third largest district in the state and covers a large portion of the northeast corner of Pennsylvania. We conclude our coverage of these congressional races with a look at Republican Chris Hackett.

Hackett feels the momentum growing as Election Day draws nearer. "These guys don't seem to have the political courage to stand up and do the right thing," he said.

Hackett calls himself an authentic conservative who'll change Washington, stop the waste, cut taxes and create jobs. "I'm very much concerned for our country and the future, we are very much going in the wrong direction," he said.

Days before the election he was stumping for votes and visiting with supporters at the triton hose company in Tunkhannock. And Hackett says his opponent is running scared. "Over the last ten days we've had a situation where there have been five events where Chris Carney has not shown up at, candidate forums where I have been at and I find it troubling that he's not willing to show up in front of the voters and explain his voting record.”

Hackett says the differences between the two candidates are extreme, as evidenced by his beliefs and Carney's voting record. "I believe we need to protect life from conception to natural death. Chris Carney has a 100 percent voting record with Naral. I believe we need to create an environment that allows businesses to create jobs and create taxpayers, not raise taxes. Chris Carney has voted for every tax increase that he could find coming down the pipe. I think we need to have true energy independence by drilling on the outer continental shelf, drilling in the Alaskan tundra. Chris Carney has opposed that at every turn."

But his opponent, Carney has been on the offensive, attacking Hackett for not paying taxes on his businesses. "I've run several businesses and I've always paid my taxes and what Chris Carney is effectively doing is distorting legitimate business disputes that we have."

And what Carney calls Hackett’s hypocrisy for saying one thing and doing another about unpaid taxes and for hiring an illegal immigrant. "Instead of Chris Carney talking about the issues and defending his votes, because I think a lot of his votes are wrong, they're very liberal and that's what we should be talking about are the issues, if he thinks he's voting the right way lets talk about the issues, lets not resort to personal attacks."

Hackett says voters in the 10th District have a clear choice come November 4th. "We need people with leadership skills to step forward that are going to do the right thing and not be driven by special interest groups, not be self serving and not be worrying about the next election but doing the right thing and that's the kind of change we need in Washington and that's the kind of change that I expect to be able to bring and that's why I think the voters should vote for me in November."
