WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY -- "Take this all of you and drink from it."
Jesus might have said that to his disciples, but Monsignor Banick of St. Mary's Church in Wilkes-Barre asked his parishioners to not drink from the cup. It was a directive handed down by the Catholic Bishops of Pennsylvania.
"I think it's a good idea," said Marie Masker of Wilkes-Barre. "I don't feel that it should be given to the people, although I know Monsignor doesn't do it when there's a flu season."
"We're kind of used to it," confirmed Msgr. Banick. "Because during the flu season each year, for many years now, we have served holy communion under one species - just the bread."
But suspending the serving of the blood of Christ wasn't the only change. Parishioners are asked to not have physical contact when exchanging the sign of peace.
"They're not supposed to shake hands, just wave your hand or bow or nod," said Masker, who we saw wave to others during that part of mass.
"There are a lot of people in church that just bow to each other already, so we've asked them to universalize that," added Msgr. Banick.
While some might feel their traditions are being tested, others say it has to be done.
"I think it's wise to be cautious," said Rosalie Budjnoski of Wilkes-Barre.
The directive goes into effect today, October 18, and will be lifted only under the direction of local bishops. | |
