Delaware Township, Northumberland County-

Dozens of volunteers are helping some neighbors in need in Northumberland County. Workers are helping to construct the new Watsontown United Methodist Church on Eighth Street Drive in Delaware Township.

They call themselves “Volunteers in Mission,” and they come from all over central Pennsylvania. About 30 of them are hard at work helping to construct the new church.

Volunteer Bill Toner, of Harrisburg, said, “Most people just try to give back because God’s been good to them and they’re going to return the favor.”

This week they’re completing the wooden framework. In fact, they’ve made amazing progress in just the past two days.

Watsontown United Methodist Church Pastor Doug Eberly explained, “It’s a great savings that allows us to have the finest building that we can afford to put up that we can be better able to serve the Lord and our community.”

The old Watsontown United Methodist Church is on Third Street. The building is almost 140 years old. It needs some repairs, and there’s no room to expand.

The new church is about 5,000 square feet larger. It’s all on one floor and has about 40 acres of land.

The volunteers will be back in a couple weeks to install drywall. For them, it’s a chance give back, meet new people, and try new things.

Toner noted, “There’s a school teacher here. She’s never touched a hammer or a saw in her life and you probably couldn’t get the saw out of her hand right now.”

Eberly added, “A lot of them, this isn’t what they do during the week, so they’re getting a chance to do something different and put their faith into action.”

They say it’s a gift that keeps giving.

Toner said, “Hopefully someday somebody comes to our church and helps us when we want it.”

Total cost for the new Watsontown United Methodist Church is about $2 million. The congregation expects to move into its new home by the end of the year.
