SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- The impending announcement in the diocese seems to be the talk of the town. Many people say they've heard "rumblings" of changes, but now they just want to know exactly whatÕs going on.

Ronald Brudzinski of Scranton was shocked to hear the news. The man he's called bishop since 2003, Bishop Joseph Martino, is most likely on the way out. ÒI'm sad. I'm sad to hear that, because I expected him to be in the diocese for a few more years anyway."

As mass at St. Peter's Cathedral let out Friday afternoon, others were also stunned. They all admitted Martino has had a controversial role in the diocese though, closing churches and schools even up until this day.

Esther Linko of Scranton said, ÒItÕs kind of heartbreaking. I liked our Bishop. He had a job to do and he did it. I'm sorry to hear him have to go really."

Diocesan spokesman Bill Genello left mass without commenting. He earlier issued a news release saying the diocese will make no comments before Monday's news conference.

Parishioners say there was also no mention of impending changes at mass.

Al Garren of Old Forge said, ÒThey didn't mention it no... I'm surprised. I guess they're gonna have to wait until the last minute or something."

Even if word comes last minute, the faithful here in Scranton and the entire 11-county diocese will be watching.

Monday's news conference is scheduled for 10:00 A. M. It is not open to the public but will be broadcast live on Catholic Television.
