Church treasurer arrested

A Luzerne County man employed as achurch treasurer is charged with taking tens of thousands of dollars in churchfunds for his own use.
Daniel Shission of West Wyoming was arraigned Tuesdaymorning.
Putting his allegedcrime into words, Luzerne County district attorney JackieMusto Carroll said this
"Well findourselves here again announcing the arrest of an individual for theft of publicfunds," said Carrol.
Shission allegedly wrotemore than 100 checks to himself, about 50 thousand dollars worth, while servingas a church treasurer.
Investigators say ithappened over the course of 4 years, from 2002 to 2006.
Shission was thetreasurer of the Carverton United Methodist Charge....a combination of 3churches: Mt. Zion , Carverton, and Orange Methodist, all in the back mountain of Luzerne County .
Police say Shissionadmitted to the church that he stole the money, and said he was going to pay itback. And when he didn't, that's when church leaders went to police."
Carroll says, "We'reseeing cases like this, an awful lot of them now, because people are realizingthey better tell the authorities and not try to handle it themselves becausethey're going no where when they handle it themselves."
And Shission's troublesdon't stop with these charges.
He's a current employeeat Mt. Airy casino.
The Pennsylvania gaming commission saysthe casino and Luzerne County D -A’s office told itabout the arrest.
The commission isinvestigating the charges, which could put Shissoins job in jeopardy.
For now he's free untila preliminary hearing next week.
The Luzerne County D -A’s office says itdoesn't know where the money went, or what Shissions motive was for stealingthe money. | | |
