WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY -- Cindy McCain, wife of Senator and Presidential hopeful John McCain, spoke at a rally on the campus of Wilkes University Saturday afternoon. Chants of "First Lady" were heard throughout the Marts Center.

Cindy McCain spoke to us one-on-one, saying her husband and running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, are the leaders who can turn the economy around.

"They don't want to tax small business. They want to help them thrive. And even more importantly, they have a plan to keep people in their homes," said McCain. "Both of them stand up for what they believe in, even bucking up against their own party to do what's right for the people."

With just 18 days left until the election, McCain says hitting the campaign trail can be tiring.

"But when we get frustrated or a little down, we just remind each other how lucky we are to be contending for the highest office in the land," she said.

McCain is known for her humanitarian work throughout the world -- something she says will continue even if serving as the First Lady.

"That's really what makes me tick," McCain said. "And I want to encourage others to get involved. You don't have to go overseas to make a difference. You can start locally."

She reminded people that simply because her husband is Republican, he is not President George W. Bush. She says he's his own man, and they'll spend the next several days getting out their message to voters across the country.

"We're going to work as hard as we can through November 4th to make sure people know what we stand for," said McCain. "And then we'll take it one day at a time after that."
