CLARKS SUMMIT, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- A company thought to help people with getting a loan is actually under investigation for stealing money from customers. Clarks Summit police are getting calls from across the nation on this scam.

Clarks Summit Police Chief Louis Vitale gets a lot of calls in the line of duty. But over the past few days some of those calls have been coming from people out of state, California for instance, who have been caught up in what appears to be a financial scam. It involves a company called Marathon Global which lists an address in Clarks Summit and offers attractive loans to people in need of financial help.

Chief Vitale explained "What the scam victims will do is they'll go through the whole process of a loan, there's a loan application on here and run you through the whole thing. Then they'll tell you, because you're a certain risk, they need X amount of money up front before they send you your check, this loan that you need to get yourself out of trouble. You send the money Western Union, which with Western Union once its in their system the money can be picked up almost anywhere with a pin number. So it’s very hard to locate them and you never receive your funds."

The address that's listed on the company's web site happens to be the home of Community Bank. But nobody here has any connection with Marathon Global.

Police Chief Vitale called the 800 number listed on the web site only to reach an individual with a foreign accent who offered insulting remarks after the chief identified himself as a police officer.

But Chief Vitale said the investigation will not end with his department. "We've contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation and we're going to give them the information and see if they may be of some assistance in trying to track it down" stated Chief Vatale
