SHICKSHINNY, LUZERNE COUNTY- Members of the Northwest Area School Board and district residents took aim at Junior High School teachers one week after all but six educators failed to show at a back-to-school night.
Most school administrators chalk-up the game of "hooky" played by teachers as just another chapter in what they described as an ever-snowballing relationship with the union over stalled contract talks.
But local union representatives have maintained that's not the case. They are claiming the district violated a long-standing accommodation for teachers by not allowing them to leave school early on the day of the back-to-school evening.
The district and the union face non-binding arbitration within the next couple of weeks. If that fails, it's unknown how much longer the impasse will last.
