CARBONDALE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Members of the Carbondale community cleaned up one of the oldest cemeteries in Lackawanna County Saturday.

Mike Coyle said, "It makes me feel excited to know I'm making a difference in the community. It’s part of our history and the best way to be a part of that is to get in the trenches and do the work."

More than 6,000 burials happened at the Maplewood Cemetery. But over the years it’s been let go, which is why volunteers, including a group from Red Dragon Karate, mixed sweat with dirt to make a difference. “I looked and I said this is history, these are our ancestors. They're family and look how we're showing respect to them, letting the place overgrow," said Coyle.

It didn't matter your age, the weight you pulled, or your disability - everyone came to do their part. Steve Woody said, "When I was a kid, we did this once and I just saw it in the paper and wanted to do it again."

Carbondale City Councilman John Gigliotti said, "And if you look at the masonry work, it's beautiful, but it needs repairs. We need Volunteers to do masonry to help us out to restore the facade."

All of it’s being done to breathe new life back into an historic cemetery.
