Colegrove Found Guilty of Killing Mom, Dad, Brother - Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at 10:52PM EST
TOWANDA, BRADFORD COUNTY- The Bradford County jury that convicted a man of triple murder has a day off before returning to work on a sentence. The guilty verdict came down Wednesday night after 6-hours of deliberating the fate of 32-year-old Steven Colegrove of Deposit, New York.
Eyewitness News reporter Eric Deabill reports when the verdict was read, the defendant dropped his head while his lone surviving brother let out a sigh of relief.
A stone-faced Steven Colegrove said nothing minutes after being found guilty of first and third degree murder for the deaths of his parents and brother in August 2007. Steve's brother and state police say the verdict lifts a 17-month burden.
Steven’s brother Robert Colegrove said, "I'd just like to say I'm happy it’s all over with.
State Police Corporal Brad Shatinsky said, “Its probably the most difficult investigation. I'm very proud of the members of the Pennsylvania State Police. We put a lot of long hours in - in difficult circumstances."
Prosecutors say even with Wednesday night's verdict, there are no winners in this family tragedy. Bradford County D. A.Dan Barrett said, "Three people are dead. It’s of course a sad occasion, but we're pleased the jury was able to make a determination and render a verdict."
While found guilty of First and Third Degree Murder, Colegrove was found not guilty of Second Degree Murder. Colegrove is still eligible for the death penalty. Testimony in that part of his trial will begin Friday morning in Bradford County. | | |
