COVINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Officials in Covington Township say a 5-month-long effort to collect donations for troops in Iraq has been a huge success.

Volunteers spent Wednesday sorting and packing personal items, toiletries, books, magazines and foods and snacks that were donated by people throughout the township and surrounding communities.

Financial donations will be used to pay the shipping costs.

Coordinator Judy Viola says the township set up pick up points in the community to collect the items.

Most of the boxes will go to a unit from Delaware Water Gap which is currently serving in Iraq.

Others are addressed to soldiers from the Covington Township area that are serving there.

Viola says another collection campaign will begin as soon, as the supplies gathered so far have been shipped.

Another shipment will then be made sometime in June.
