SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY
Goodfella's Pizza opened its new restaurant in Scranton's Hill neighborhood at 5 o'clock Thursday. But plans for a pool room and bar in the lower level of the facility are drawing opposition from the nearby University of Scranton.
Goodfella's owner, Tom Hashem, has been planning to build the new restaurant for several years. He has invested about one and a half million dollars to clear a blighted structure and lot next to his original business place and to build the new restaurant.
The city's Zoning Officer isued a "Stop Work Order" when he learned Hashem was adding a billiard room and bar to the lower level of the restaurant. On Wednesday night the city's Zoning Board overturned that decision.
A spokesman at the University of Scranton said the school is concerned because of plans for an additional bar. It is located just a block from where a new residence hall is being constructed that will house sophmore students. The University may appeal the Zoning Board's decision.
Goodfella's Restaurant is now open but the billiard room and bar is still under construction. | |
