Bloomsburg, Columbia County-

Columbia County commissioners are tackling what they're calling an impending heating crisis this winter.

Officials from dozens of agencies are formulating a game plan in anticipation of major heating woes.

Those who think they will need help can apply for LIHEAP, a federal energy assistance program that opens on November 3rd. For instance, a family of four earning under $32,000 would be eligible.

Diane Belusko, executive director of the Columbia County Assistance Office, said, "If they struggled to make payments before, and never applied for the program, I would encourage them to apply for the program this year."

Applications can be made in person, over the phone, or online through your local county assistance office.

The money can be used for more than just oil purchases. Belusko added, "Under the crisis component, we can use some of the money to fix pipes or do some of the insulation."

Home weatherization programs can also help with fixing heaters and sealing or repairing windows, among other things.

Commissioners at the meeting stressed that those who need assistance shouldn't be afraid or embarrassed to call for help.

Commissioner Dave Kovatch noted, "We don't want anybody to be too proud to call. There are a lot of working families that just can't make it. New people this year that didn't need help last year because somebody was laid off, a factory closed. There's a lot of reasons why we're all struggling."

Local leaders say neighbors and relatives need to get involved, and look out for one another.

Kovatch explained, "Friends helping friends, family helping family. We want them to call somebody so that we can help them. We can find ways."

Again the number to call to apply for LIHEAP is 1-866-857-7095, or contact your local county assistance office.
