WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- In Luzerne County commissioners approved their 2009 spending plan Tuesday morning. The 130-million dollar budget was ok’d by a 2 to 1 vote.
It sets the new property millage rate at 4.5 mills. That's down from last year because of the reassessment process.
27 county workers will also lose their jobs, but that number could increase dramatically if the court system also doesn't cut back.
Commissioner Mary Ann Petrilla said, "Well, in the event the courts don't come in with some type of cooperation across the board, unfortunately other departments in the county will have to see those cuts. It’s very unfair because they took a big hit in 2004 and obviously in 2008."
Right now a Luzerne County judge has filed a lawsuit to block commissioners from making cutbacks in the court system.
And if you live in Wyoming County your taxes will be going up next year. Commissioners passed their 11.6 million dollar budget Tuesday morning. It includes a 1.5 mill tax hike. Commissioners say the tax hike is needed because of cuts in state funding.
