WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY -- The Luzerne County Commissioners voted Wednesday to lay off 13 more employees. It's an effort to address the budget deficit.
The county is facing a 10% tax hike. The commissioners say these layoffs will save more than $360,000. The cutbacks will affect several departments and result in the closing of Moon Lake Park.
One commissioner says more cuts could be made in the court system. "I've always said, I don't believe the courts need full-time tip staff. I think they could get away with part-time tipstaff. Looking at salary and healthcare benefits we could save close to a half-million dollars," said Commissioner Steve Urban.
The final budget approval is set for early next month. | |
