To answer some of the most commonly asked questions regarding assessment we turn to attorney Pete Moses of Taxbusters.
Question 1: Do I need an attorney when appealing my home's reassessed value?
PM: "If you think you've been taxed unfairly then you should contact someone. A good attorney will advise you whether you have a good claim and a good attorney won't proceed unless a claim is valid and worthy."
Question 2: if I don't hire an attorney, what should I have to be prepared for my formal appeal?
PM: "When an individual goes to a formal appeal it's highly recommended they go with a certified appraisal. They should also take comparable taxes in their neighborhood to their appeal hearing. In addition if they don't have representation they should consult with someone as to what the key issues are at an assessment. For example they should point out deficiencies in home that were not detected by 21st century."
Question 3: What are my chances of winning my appeal?
PM: "Remember the appraisals done on your home are drive-by or roadside appraisals. So it's only based on how your home looked on the exterior so often times whether or not you have a chance to win depends on the unique information you have on your house that the county doesn't have."
Question 4: what do I do if I'm not satisfied with the decision from my formal appeal?
PM: "You can file an appeal with the court of common pleas and your case will be heard by a board of arbitration. If you're not happy with their decision you can appeal the decision of the board of arbitration to the court of common pleas again at which point they'll appoint a master." | |
