Community College Puts off College Expansion

Community College Puts off College Expansion - Friday, March 6, 2009 at 4:44PM EST

TANNERSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY - An area community college was scheduled to break ground on a major expansion project next month, but the economy has put that project on hold.

Northampton Community College planned to expand the Monroe County Campus. The state had promised $36 million from gambling revenues. But now state officials say the shaky economy makes it hard to predict whether or not there will be enough gambling money in the future. So they gave the college one million dollars. School officials say they will use the money to get permits and prepare to complete the expansion some day in the future.

Monroe Campus Dean Dr. Matt Connell said, "This campus will happen. It's too important, it's too fundamental and too basic to the needs of this community for it not to happen so it will happen."

The school officials hope they will be able to break ground on the expansion project sometime next spring.
