HAZLE TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY -- A Hazleton couple is facing a very long road to recovery. They were badly injured in a crash last month on Route 309.

Some described the accident scene as pure carnage. It was the night of April 14th. A speeding truck ran a red light and slammed into a car. Inside that car, 31-year-old Robert Kisatsky and his wife 29-year-old Mary suffered life-threatening injuries. Both were in intensive care for more than two weeks.

Now friends, family and strangers are coming together. Tracy Wizdo is a teacher in the Hazleton Area School District. She and others are organizing fundraisers like a Quarter Jam Auction and golf tournament.

"I think there are a lot of great people in this community. I'm a teacher myself so I did this not only for me but also for Mary, part of my employment family."

Mary Kisatsky is an elementary teacher. Her fellow teachers are stepping up. "The school district from what I understand also came together. They asked for sick days for Mary. At last count I know its 296 days that people have donated for her," she said.

And for Wizdo, this accident really hits home. "I had an uncle who just passed away from a drunk driver on Freeland-Drums Highway. I know the impact, how it affects people and their families," she said.
