Community Gathers to Raise Money for Girl With Rare Disease

Community Gathers to Raise Money for Girl With Rare Disease - Sunday, December 7, 2008 at 11:04PM EST

POLK TWP., MONROE COUNTY- A community came together Sunday to help a little girl battling a rare disease. Friends and family of daisy Sherman came together in Polk Township to raise money for the young girl's medical bills.

She's a 19-month-old girl who has a smile that can light up any room. But life has not been easy for little Daisy Sherman. Daisy’s mother Dana says, “Daisy has Ju. E.BeluSa. It’s a genetic disorder where she's missing anchors that hold skin onto her body."

That means any time daisy gets bumped or bruised, her skin peels off. Most of the time 85% of her body is covered in bandages because of the rare condition. “In the past three months, she's had five hospitalizations, mostly due to infections, due to open wounds and the severity of her wounds,” she says.

Sunday daisy's family and friends came together at the Polk Township fire hall. They held this tricky-tray auction to raise money to convert her family's garage into a sterile bandage room and to get daisy a whirlpool bath.

For many here, the fundraiser is personal. Christine Muffley said, “Daisy is my little girl’s best friend. My little girl is 21 months old. Daisy really means a lot to us. She's a little angel.”

Right now there is no cure for daisy's condition. But still she smiles through the pain. For her family and friends, that makes her an inspiration. Tina Smith said, ”When she was a little baby, she even had smiles in her pain and in her everyday life that she goes through and in her daily changes. She still manages that beautiful Daisy smile."

“What she goes through everyday amazes me that she can still smile and laugh and be happy," added Daisy’s mom Dana.

Besides the sterile bandage room, Daisy Sherman's family also needs help paying for smaller items like Tylenol and diaper rash ointment. If you'd like to help out you can make a donation through her website,
