Community Rallies Around Sick Baby

Community Rallies Around Sick Baby - Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at 5:45PM EST

TANNERSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY - WBRE and WYOU News viewers are once again proving Northeastern Pennsylvania has a generous spirit. After the news reported thieves were stealing donation jars from a sick little boy in the Poconos, donations started to pour in.
In the past people tossed nickels, dimes and quarters into the donation buckets. Now they're stuffing donation jars with singles, fives and even fifties.

"We knew some people would just give a few dollars 'cause they feel bad or whatever, but they donated a lot," said Michael Benincasa the baby's father. His son Mike Benincasa has Spinal Muscular Dystrophy. It's a genetic disease that makes it nearly impossible for him to move his muscles or breathe on his own. His family raises money for special treatments with donation jars at local businesses. Over the past month the family says thieves have snatched several jars.

"I was like who in their right mind would ever want to do that. It's just a terrible thing to do," said Bill Weichand. He works at the Sears store in the Stroud Mall. When he and other employees there heard little Michael's story they collected about $200 for him. "Any little bit helps," said Weichand.

Mike said many other local businesses and residents also chipped in. He added, "It means a lot because that means we can go sooner on trips and get medical treatment faster."

The family isn't sure how much the thieves may have taken. But they are sure that people donated more than they lost. "It was definitely a blessing in disguise," remarked Michael.

In the past week the family estimates it has raised about $2,500. They thank the entire community for every single cent that will help keep little Mike alive. His dad said, "Thank you very much for all the donations and all your help and all your kind words."

Each medical treatment and travel expenses can add up to about $30,000. The Benincasa family says it's just about $1,000 short of what they need for the next treatment.
