Community Support Slows after Arrest - Thursday, January 15, 2009 at 4:43PM EST

KRESGEVILLE, MONROE COUNTY - The man accused of killing State Senator James Rhoades while driving drunk is in jail tonight. Before his arrest he claimed he was innocent and it seemed many in the community believed him but now it looks like he's lost a lot of support.

Thomas Senavitis was seriously injured in the crash. His family put out donation jars asking for help with medical bills. Those containers are now gone.

Bobbi Labar hears people drop change into donation jars at the Kresgeville Sunoco all day as people donate their spare change for special causes. But now there's one cause that's gone quiet. "Suddenly the boxes have disappeared," said Labar.

The box to donate to Thomas Senavitis is gone. He injured himself in a car crash last October. State Senator James Rhoades died in that accident.

Shortly after the crash. The Senavitis family brought in donation containers. They needed help to pay medical bills. Labar explained, "They were placed strategically on the front with his picture, bandages."

Labar said people were glad to help, until Wednesday. That's when police arrested Senavitis in connection with the October crash. They say his blood alcohol level was more than four times the legal limit.

"They should burn those containers because he doesn't deserve anything," said Andrew Mckenna. He told us he wouldn't donate a penny and he thinks Senavitis should give back any donations the public gave him. He said it should, "go to the family of the lost one to be able to support the family. Whenever you lose someone you love it's hard. It's the hardest time in their life."

If the police are right drunk driving caused a hard time for the Rhoades family and a hard time for the Senavitis family. Hard times that no donation will ever heal.
