WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- A construction crew hit a gas line while digging on Hickory Street near Lehigh Street Thursday morning. The line ruptured sending the smell of gas into the air through a large portion of downtown Wilkes-Barre.

The odor traveled as far as Public Square just before 9:00 A. M. and had the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department responding to a number of 9-1-1 calls about the smell of gas.

UGI crews arrived and shut off the gas to 8 homes. They’re working on repairing the line. No injuries were reported.
