DELAWARE WATER GAP, MONROE COUNTY - Pieces of the World Trade Center made in Pennsylvania were returned to their birthplace today.
The beams that formed the first nine floors of the towers were forged in Coatesville. Wednesday a truck convoy carried them through Monroe County.
It was a heroes escort for the World Trade Center remains. Nancy Olivieri of East Stroudsburg said, "All of our lives have been touched by the tragedy of 9/11."
28 trucks - a caravan a mile long - carried the steel bones. Olivieri said,"I guess there is a sacred element to the metal to the steel."
The steel traveled from New York to its final resting place in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Kim Eilenberger of Saylorsburg said,"It's very emotional. I mean you get teary-eyed just thinking about it."
Along the route - people gathered on overpasses. Stanley Novak was among them. He said,"Cause I'm a patriot first of all - an American and I'm proud to be American."
He was working near the towers the day they fell. He said, "The World Trade Center represents all of us Americans united."
And Nancy Olivieri watched to remember. She said,"It still stirs up a lot of memories. A friend of our family was a firefighter who unfortunately lost his life."
Some truckers say this was their most precious cargo ever. Sacred pieces of American history. Manual Carro said, "Just to be part of it I believe is worth a million bucks."
They're pieces that will be turned into a memorial, so that no one forgets September 11, 2001.
