SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- The Lackawanna County Prison Board responded Wednesday to complaints about health care at the lockup. Those complaints were drafted by a local chapter of an international justice organization that conducted unauthorized interviews in the jail.

The Lackawanna County Prison Board tackled a bit more than routine business at its regular monthly meeting. A good portion of the session dealt with reaction to the report by the regional chapter of Pax Christi, a church based organization often involved in human rights issues. That report was critical of the health care offered and available to inmates at the county jail.

Lackawanna County Prison Warden Janine Donate said that all prisons are trying to deal with a shortage of mental health and drug and alcohol services for inmates, but stressed that the county jail meets all existing state and federal standards. She said she didn't mind getting a list of suggestions from the organization even though they were based on unauthorized interviews with about 16 inmates. "It’s always helpful to have anyone that would be a family member or whatever just gives you their suggestions, opinions. We're always open to that. Sometimes you don't like what people have to say, but its heard none the less and we address what we can" explained Warden Donate.

While the warden attempted to answer all of the recommendations in the report other prison board members were not quite as diplomatic, questioning the validity of the report itself.

Lackawanna County District Attorney Andy Jarbola declared "We don't know the qualifications of the individuals that were involved. As far as I know Pax Christi is not a registered corporation or a registered company in the state of Pennsylvania."

Lackawanna County Commissioner A/J. Munchack's reaction was even harsher: They have "No creditability what-so-ever and we're addressing it as a board. It’s just ridiculous!"

Prison board members said as far as they're concerned the report has been put to rest.
