SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY
A three-judge panel has approved a request from the city of Carbondale to borrow one million dollars to cover unfunded debt. The request must also be approved by the state.
Carbondale mayor Justin Taylor said the city's unfunded debt grew to nearly a million dollars this year for several reasons. First increases in wages and benefits for the city's police and fire departments. It cost the city $91,000 in wages and benefits for each of its seven fire fighters. The price tag for the city's fifteen police officers comes to some $81,000 per officer. Additionally mayor Taylor says the city lost $145,000 in tax revenue in 2007 and $200,000 in garbage fees that were not paid.
The city hopes to raise its revenues through increased code enforcement fees and fines of derelict properties. | |
