Williamsport, Lycoming County-

State budget cuts are severely impacting libraries across the Commonwealth. So one local library is getting creative with its fundraising efforts.

There were parent-teacher conferences in Williamsport Friday. So just like many other days, kids here hit the James V. Brown Library to fill the gap.

12-year-old Haley Banks said, "They're really helpful for me. If I don't know where a book is, they tell me where it is."

12-year-old Devon Caudell added, "For the books mainly, and the computers."

13-year-old Ya’heia Brown continued, "I use the library to learn new ideas and read books and get on the computer."

It turns out the library's got some new ideas as well. To stop the bleeding from the loss of state funds in this year's budget, they've come up with a new fundraiser.

Miniature golf--in the library? You bet!

The library’s development coordinator, Robin Glossner, noted, "It's going to be a fun day and an opportunity for people and families to come down here and participate in something for a very reasonable cost that will help the library."

18 holes of mini-golf will be set up around the library’s various wings. Five bucks gets you a ball and club and off you go.

And library staff says there are plenty of good reasons to support the cause.

Glossner explained, "So that we don't have to close for more days, so we don't have to drastically slash our acquisitions budget and continue to get the new books and videos and everything that people want, continue to run the programs that people depend on."

The kids who come here agree. They don't want to imagine life without their library.

12-year-old Karissa Bennett said, "Well, I might fail some of my classes because I wouldn't be able to come and look things up that I need to that I can't get from anywhere else."

Anyone who wants to participate in the James V. Brown Library's mini-golf fundraiser can do so during their open hours from 10am- 8pm on Saturday.
