SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - The Lackawanna County DA's office plans to seek the death penalty against an accused child killer from Scranton.

Darak Williams, 26, was back in court Monday morning for his formal arraignment. The hearing lasted only minutes, but for the first time, we heard from the accused kiler. Williams says he is 100 percent innocent. He maintains he didn't kill his girlfriend's baby last year and he intends to fight the murder charges against him.

Prosecutors say the death penalty is appropriate because Williams killed Kavannah Salvadore, who was only three-years-old.

"Our policy has been, where a circumstance exists, an aggravated circumstance exists, it (death penalty paperwork) is filed and left for a jury to decide," Assistant District Attorney Gene Talerico said.

Prosecutors say Salvadore was basically tortured before her death last February. Court papers show she had a fractured skull and massive internal injuries.

"I think that was laid out in great details at the preliminary hearing, the nature of the injuries and the long-standing nature of the infliction and certainly that's all evidence that will come out as we go forward," Talerico said.

In addition to maintaining his innocence Monday morning, Darak Williams also said life is "precious" to him.

"I'm certainly not comfortable commenting on whatever statements he made in court. I imagine they speak for themselves. We will try our case in court with evidence," Talerico said.

Kasheema Reddish, the baby's mother, is also facing third-degree murder charges in this case. Prosecutors say she didn't do enough to protect the baby. Both suspects could face trial together in November.

"The commonwealth is asking that both cases be tried together, based on the same similiar evidence," Talerico said.
