JESSUP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Safety experts in Pennsylvania are pushing the use of an electronic device that helps keep drunk drivers off the road.

PennDOT and the state's DUI’s Awareness Campaign demonstrated a so-called Ignition Interlock Device at the Valley View Industrial Park on Thursday.

Courts can order their installation in vehicles driven by individuals who have had one or more drunken driving convictions. The driver has to blow into the device before trying to start his or her car. If alcohol is detected, the car won't start.

Michael McConnell of the Pennsylvania Interlock Ignition Program explained "This technology is actually being used to save lives on Pennsylvania roadways. Last year there were over 28,000 attempts to drive impaired stopped by the ignition interlock device."

Several companies make versions of the ignition interlock devices.

Safety experts said the devices use can reduce relapses of drunk driving by as much as 95 percent.
