EAST STROUDSBURG - Eyewitness News found a sure sign of Spring Monday; Daffodils! It's time for the American Cancer Society's "Daffodil Days." It's one of the organizations biggest fundraisers. Before they can sell the daffodils, volunteers have to wrap the bunches in paper. We visited the wrapping party in Monroe County.
Penny Dee wrapped up a seven year fight with cancer so now she's wrapping up daffodils to say "thank you." She explained, "Once you hear the word cancer, in your mind you hear the word death. The Cancer Society helped me understand that it can be life as well."
Penny volunteered for the Daffodil wrap party because the society helped her fight breast cancer. She said, "American Cancer Society helped me tremendously on getting the knowledge to fight it with confidence."
For Penny the bright yellow flower represents the end of a long battler, her own personal winter. She said, "That daffodil is like the first bud in spring. It gives you hope for a future."
She and about 100 other volunteers got together in East Stroudsburg to wrap the flowers, 75,000 of them. "That's a lot of flowers," remarked Kathy Lombardo of the Daffodil Days Committee.
In addition to the wrapped bunches that people usually buy, there's something new this year; potted daffodil plants. Lombardo said, "You can take them home and plant them in your yard so you'll have them for years to come,"
A sign of hope for you, for your neighbors and for survivors like Penny Dee.
The economy forced daffodil prices up this year. They now sell for $10 a bunch, that's up from $8 a bunch last year.
