Dairy farmers look for relief - Monday, February 16, 2009 at 2:44PM EST

HONESDALE, WAYNE COUNTY

Hundreds of farmers turned out for the Dairy-Agi Day in Wayne County Monday. Many were dairy farmers who say they are facing serious economic problems.

The farmers say that, under current prices, they are losing some thirty cents for each gallon of milk they put on the grocer's shelves. That, they say, is because production costs are way up while the price they make per gallon is down.

Deputy State Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding said he believes a different way must be found to price milk. Redding said that farmers understand changes in pricing cycles but believe they need more stability. Redding said he believes that must be done on a national level.
