Williamsport, Lycoming County-
A young boy’s inspiring idea is helping hundreds of people in Lycoming County. Now we’d like to introduce you to the little boy behind Daniel’s Closet.
Last winter, a poor man knocked on the door of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Williamsport, just hoping to escape the cold for a few minutes. Nine-year-old Daniel Horn and another man from the church let the stranger in, offering food and friendship.
Daniel explained, “Some people in the world just don’t have a lot of money like us, and so I feel the need to help them."
That generous spirit was engrained in Daniel, so much that he knew there was more he could do for the less fortunate.
Daniel’s grandmother Barbara Horn recalled, “He said, Nana, we have to help these people. People like this, we have to have food for them, we have to have clothes. Can’t we open every Sunday and let them come and pick out coats and things.”
And that’s how Daniel’s Closet was born.
It took some time to get the ball rolling. Now Daniel’s Closet is open one Saturday morning each month.
His dream of helping others has become quite a reality. And the event is constantly growing.
When church members first opened Daniel’s Closet in March, about 40 people showed up looking for help. This Saturday, organizers expect to welcome more than 300 people through the doors. They say they’re just glad they can do their part.
If Daniel has inspired you, he also has a message he wants you to hear.
“Come in and help,” he said, noting the constant need for volunteers.
It’s a message that fills Daniel’s grandmother with pride.
She added, “Kids have a way of putting things into perspective. It’s their innocence, their simplicity. We could all learn from it.”
Daniel’s Closet will be open this Saturday from 9-11 at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Washington Boulevard in Williamsport. It’s open to the public, and clothing donations are always welcomed.
