Danville Ditches School Expansion Plan

Danville Ditches School Expansion Plan - Thursday, February 28, 2008 at 5:44PM EST

DANVILLE- Controversy in a local school district after the board ditches an expansion plan. The change has many people in Danville upset.

Most would agree that something needs to be done about the overcrowding caused by a growing elementary population at the Danville Area School District. The previous school board passed a plan of action to address the situation, but that vote was reversed earlier this week by newly elected board members, and a new plan was voted on.

The new plan consists of closing down Danville Elementary, while expanding at Riverside and Mahoning Cooper Elementary. That's at a cost of six million dollars more than the old plan, which called for the construction of one large, all-inclusive, elementary building.

That new plan does not sit well with parents we spoke to. Tom Vonblohn's son, Jacob, currently attends Danville Elementary. "Most of the kids in Danville go here to the elementary school. I don't understand why they'd want to bus them elsewhere," he said.
