Danville, Montour County -
Danville ’s police force is getting a helping hand, or in this case, some helping eyes, to watch for trouble downtown. Council members are buying three new surveillance cameras.
Collins Stump, a council member says, “Everyone would like to have a bigger police force, however the economics dictate otherwise. So we’ve got to supplement our police surveillance by using cameras. That’s what metropolitan areas and smaller towns are going to.”
The hope is that the cameras will take some strain off Danville ’s police department, which numbers only seven officers, by discouraging criminal activity.
Ann Carol Malcom, a business owner says, “We have different kinds of people with different intents, at different times of the day.”
The new cameras are being used on a trial basis. If they’re successful council members might purchase more in the future.
But not everyone agrees that cameras are the way to go. Helga Loncosky, of Elysburg says, “If they’re only going to go back and review it after something’s been committed, the chance is 50/50 that they’ll actually be caught, and I think the criminals know that.
Some suggested other programs might be more effective. “Honestly I think maybe they could do more if they were more involved in neighborhood watches and go that route in a case like this. You know, Danville ’s a pretty tight community. They might get further with that than spending the money on cameras.
The new cameras and equipment come with a price tag of about nine thousand dollars. | |
