Williamsport, Lycoming County-
A letter from a grieving father in New Jersey led to a proclamation in Williamsport Thursday. The man's daughter, Emily, was killed by her college boyfriend about nine months ago.
Studies show roughly one third of adolescent girls fall victim to dating violence at some point.
A bill currently in the state senate would mandate schools have a dating violence curriculum. It would also more effectively partner schools with their local domestic violence and rape crisis centers.
YWCA Wise Options Director Deb Shivetts noted, "It's something that we need to address now in the middle schools and high schools to adapt their behavior, teach them how to recognize abusive relationships, so that we don't continue the cycle."
On Thursday morning, Mayor Gabe Campana proclaimed February as in Williamsport.
