Williamsport, Lycoming County-

Details continue to emerge about a fatal early morning shooting in Williamsport.

Residents of the 1400 block of Scott Street awoke to police lights and sirens just after midnight Wednesday morning. People were shocked to learn that a man had been killed.

Neighbor Betty Records explained, “A neighbor called and said that there was a body, dead body, out in the middle of the street. And I didn’t believe her. I came down and looked and I saw the body up here and it had a sheet over it."

"All the neighbors were out, you know, wondering what was going on and the police were here. They had the tape all around. It was really chaotic,” Records added.

According to city police, the victim was a 26-year-old black male, who died of a single fatal gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are not revealing the man’s identity until family members are notified.

No arrests have been made and no suspect has been named. They also would not speculate on a cause for the shooting.

Records noted, “To find someone out in the middle of your street, in your neighborhood- dead- when you’ve been here almost 31 years, now that’s a little bit disturbing.”

People here say more police patrols and better lighting are needed throughout the neighborhood. They’re also working to organize a local crime watch.

Records added, “Now maybe the neighbors will quit hesitating, see what happened. They’ll come and start getting into it, and helping out.”
