WILKES-BARRE -- About 50 million Americans suffer from allergies and this region is not the easiest place to live if you suffer from them. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America lists Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and Scranton among it's top 30 "allergy capitals" this year.

Those rankings are based on pollen and air pollutants, but people suffer from food allergies as well. These food allergies can sometimes result in Anaphylaxis, when several parts of the body experience allergic food reactions at the same time. This type of reaction can be fatal.

Research shows that if you have allergies your kids are likely to have allergies, and that genetics plays a major role in determining what a person may be allergic to. Even though allergies may be a family affair, treatment can be different from person to person.

WYOU Interactive discusses common allergies and the treatments available with medical expert Dr. Brian Mott, allergist Dr. Joel Laury and with the mother of allergic children Marie Bonavoglia.
