BRODHEADSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY - Their hands are sore and their backs are tired. Brodheadsville Post Office employees processed 300 boxes to mail to Iraq Monday.

It's part of "Operation Touch of Home" in Monroe County.

This is the fourth year the organization has sent packages to our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

First Lieutenant Jim Cameron will deploy on a War on Terror mission to Afghanistan in just a few months but Monday he had a different kind of mission - as a volunteer for "Operation Touch of Home."

Over the weekend the Lieutenant and hundreds of other volunteers collected tons of treats and necessities for soldiers from northeast Pennsylvania who serve in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Monday morning they delivered all 300 boxes to the post office. They unloaded package after package and filled postal cart after postal cart. This year the operation collected about 8,000 pounds of goodies for our troops. That's more than they've ever collected before.

"It really is overwhelming to see the amount of boxes. I feel bad for the poor employees here at the post office," said Dean Green the founder of the operation.

Postal Clerk Chris Baldwin came in an hour early to help. She said, "Those people that are over there can't do much more for us than they are doing now. So this is the least we can do for them."

Lieutenant Cameron knows how special it is to get a gift from home. He served in Bosnia. "We appreciate that the people back home take time out of their weekends and out of their checkbooks to donate these things to send over to us," he explained.

And that's why he volunteered for this mission - to deliver a touch of home to our special fighters.

Mission Accomplished.

The volunteers mailed the packaged to 60 soldiers from our area. There are enough toiletries and treats for the soldiers to share with the others in their units.

It cost about $3,000 to ship the packages. "Operation Touch of Home" collects the money at fund raisers throughout the year.
