PLAINS TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY- Parishioners at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church call it "sick." Someone desecrated a beloved statue over the weekend. Police are asking for the public's help.
The battered statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was discovered Monday evening. A number of parishioners were there to recite the rosary.
Neighbors relayed to police they heard something around six Sunday morning. They say it sounded like banging. They saw the alleged vandal leave in a dark car.
Whatever the case, it resulted in the hands and nose of the granite statue being broken off.
Pieces of the shattered were found lying at the statue's base. Police believe the vandal attempted to knock off the head of the statue, but were unable.
Police want to talk with anyone who may know about this crime.
A reward is being offered by the parish community.
Call Plains Township at (570) 829-3432.
