SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty announced some major development plans during his annual "State of the City Address."
Doherty told a group of business and civic leaders that "the state of our city is strong." He said the city's high ranking in property values and the national attention it received when hosting a convention based on the television series "The Office" has people everywhere aware of Scranton and its success.
Mayor Doherty also spoke of developments that will soon be taking place in "The Electric City." One involves an 8 million dollar investment to replace the aging Lackawanna Avenue Bridge. That span will be closed in May to allow work to begin.
There are also plans for an Intermodel Transportation Center and renovations to convert an old railroad station into offices and a restaurant. There are also plans to demolish about 60 run down houses in various sections of the city as well as a project that will have a thousand new trees planted in South Scranton neighborhoods.
Speaking with reporters after his address the mayor reaffirmed his decision to run for another term next year.
