Failed investments account for more than half that figure. Operating expenses for the diocese ran 600-thousand-dollars in the red. Church leaders caution things are not likely to improve. The diocese' major fundraising campaign, the annual appeal, is significantly below goal. The report released today is a snapshot taken even before the stock market plunge in September. Worse numbers are expected for the current fiscal year.
